What are the eligibility requirements for a Princeton in Africa fellowship?
Please note there are different eligibility requirements for our general/flagship fellowship program and our pilot Nexus program. Please see both sets of eligibility requirements outlined below. Princeton in Africa is not limited to Princeton graduates only. Applicants would only be eligible to apply for both programs, if they are currently residing on the African continent, and have a bachelors or postgraduate degree from a U.S. accredited institution AND an African institution.
For the General/Flagship fellowship program:
All graduates from 4-year U.S. accredited institutions are eligible to apply for the general fellowship program. Additionally:
- Applicants must be young professionals or graduating seniors graduating by June 2023 at the time of application
- Applicants must be graduates of a 4-year U.S. accredited University*
- Applicants must have full professional English proficiency. Additionally, French is preferred at some posts
- Applicants must be no more than 35 years of age through the duration of the fellowship
- Applicants must have a passport valid through the fellowship date
*If you are unsure if your university is U.S.-accredited, check this database of U.S.- accredited universities. Note, most universities outside of the U.S. are not U.S.-accredited; if you graduate from a non-U.S. accredited university, then obtain an additional degree from a U.S.-accredited university, you would be eligible to apply for Princeton in Africa. All applicants must have a 4-year undergraduate degree or a graduate degree from a U.S.-accredited university.
For the pilot Nexus program:
- Applicants must be young professionals or current undergraduates graduating by June 2023 at the time of application
- Applicants must have full professional English proficiency. Additionally, French is preferred at some posts
- Applicants must be no more than 35 years of age through the duration of the fellowship
- Applicants must have a passport valid through the fellowship date
- Nexus Applicants must have citizenship in an African country and have current residency in an African country (applicants with dual U.S. citizenship will not be considered)
- Nexus Applicants must have an Undergraduate degree or a Master’s degree (or equivalent), or a Ph.D. from an African University. Note, Nexus Applicants do not need to be graduates of a U.S.-accredited university.

Our History
In 1999, a group of Princeton alumni, faculty, and staff launched Princeton in Africa as an independent affiliate of Princeton University inspired by the University’s informal motto, “Princeton in the Nation’s Service and in the Service of All Nations.” In 2010, the program opened up to include graduates of any US accredited university in order to meet the growing demand from host organizations and allow more young professionals access to the unique opportunities afforded by PiAf. During the past 20 years, we have placed over 600 Fellows with more than 100 organizations in 36 countries, while developing more strategic partnerships across Africa and creating more opportunities for our alumni community to engage with the continent and with one another.
